Our daughter is studying in Copenhagen this semester, and DH and I will be visiting her in mid-April for 7 nights. She can help us cover the Copenhagen sights (she loves the city!), but since it's her break, she also wants to take an excursion with us. She heard the overnight cruise to Oslo is a fun and affordable trip. If we did that, I would be interested in the Norway in the Nutshell tour. I am going through the websites trying to figure out whether this would be a crazy idea in this short amount of time. I would be happy just puttering around various locations in Denmark, but I think she wants to travel more for part of her time off. She is fortunate to travel quite a bit in Denmark as part of her school program.
Because the Copenhagen-Oslo cruise is overnight, we might have to do Norway in a Nutshell as a day trip. We have reservations in Copenhagen for the first few nights of the trip and the last night before we fly home. I know the connections are limited in April - for example, I see the boat comes in at 9:30am and the trip leaves at 8:05am, so we would spend the day and night in Oslo and take the morning train. In a daytrip, we would arrive back in Oslo and possibly spend another night there, or fly back to Copenhagen. Our US flights are booked, so flying home out of Oslo isn't an option. Nothing is set in stone as far as "must-dos", but if I were in Oslo, I would like to take a peek at those fjords! Typically, we would prefer spending more time and being much more active, but I am looking at it as an opportunity we might not have again anytime soon. Any input on logistics would be appreciated - thanks in advance!

Given the limited time, I would look for a cheap flight from Copenhagen to Oslo, which might give you some time in Oslo; let the fun cruise be the NIN. Check to see if there is also a flight from Bergen back to Copenhagen. The NIN trip does start very early in the morning and arrives in Bergen around 7 or 8 in the evening, if memory serves me right. It would arrive back in Oslo even later. Since you would have to spend the night either in Oslo or Bergen, it might make sense to spend it in Bergen and hope of a late afternoon flight to Copenhagen, giving you the opportunity to visit the historic section of Bergen by the waterfront.
Michael, thanks for your input. A quick look showed that the times of inexpensive, direct flights out of Bergen wouldn't work out. So we could go in 2 directions: 1) Book the NIN roundtrip which would bring us back to Oslo at around 6:30 am (I think) the following day where we could spend the day in Oslo before getting back on the cruise ship at 4:45 or 2)fly right back to Copenhagen so we have most of the day there. There are more flight options out of Oslo. It doesn't look like it would work to stay along the NIN route. The ferry and flights would be similar in prices coming out of Oslo (excluding cost of hotel). How convenient is it in Oslo to get between train station, ferry terminal and airport? Thanks again!
Actually, by the time I factor in the extra cruise fares, it might be worth the money to fly out of Bergen. It would be nice to spend a little time there!
