My wife and I will be in Portugal in late May to the first week in June and are considering staying in the Pousadas (starting in the new Placio on the Duro in Porto. renting a car and slowly driving to Lisbon). We are seniors and have allergies that cause problems when people have been smoking in hotel rooms and we need air conditioning on hot days. So we have three questions: First, do any of the Pousadas have non smoking rooms or are smoke free (or have any of you noticed that people have beens smoking in the rooms)? Second, are any of them air conditioned or will the weather be cool enough (e.g. 60's F) so that we won't need it? and Third, what Pousadas do you recommend as we depart from Porto with three nights to reach Lisbon?

The pousadas are lovely and most have excellent restaurants too. Go to www.pousadas.pt to research the different properties. I am sure ours had a/c and we are also also allergic to smoke. I don't recall any problems but you can email them through the website of the Pousadas and ask them.
We stayed inpousadas in Evora, and Obidos and also Guimares, north of Porto,a beautiful area.We felt that they were of a higher level than Spain's paradors. Most of the pousadas are historic buildings but they also have contemporary ones.
They also offer lots of special deals so check the website for them.
Agree with HappyTrvlr..Loved the same pousadas and several others. No cig smells but Obidos had just varnished the hall window..Shutting the door worked just fine. Check out Pousadas.pt they often have excellent deals. We even had a special car/pousadas package which was super. Ask for golden age rates. Bussaco Palace was also a lovely place to stay. Evora is another v. nice one. Also check out Pestana Group website. Their hotels are great and they also run the pousadas..You won't go wrong. generally speaking you won't need AC as evenings are pleasant at this time of year if I remember correctly.
The Pousadas have non-smoking rooms, but be aware that smoking is still very popular in Portugal.
The Palácio do Freixo in Oporto (www.pousadas.pt) is a beautiful property, which opened in 2009. On a slow drive south to Lisbon, you will have the opportunity of staying at up to 14 different Pousadas. With only three days, you might want to consider spending the night at the Pousada de Vila Pouca da Beira, Pousada de Condeixa-a-Nova, Pousada de Óbidos, Pousada de Cascais, Pousada de Arraiolos (my personal favorite), and the Pousada de Alcácer do Sal, D. Afonso II.
Thanks very much for the great advice from HappyTrvlr, Amer_can andRobert2533. We'll get back to you with what we planned and a trip report.
If you want to check sometimes pousadas.pt has drive and stay deal which really worked for DH, DD, and self. You can deakl directly with them via web site.
Also if you want Obidos and/or Evora you will have to book ASAP as they go fast. few rooms..Don't know the new one in Porto but it looks awesome.
