Morning all,
My wife and I are making our first trip to Germany in May and staying in Munich fro 4 nights. We thought on one day we would rent a car to see Neuschwanstein castle and then thought it would be fun to stay in a small town along the way for a night. I have heard there are lots of places but if anyone has any reccomendations I would apprecaite them.
Cheers,
Justin

I would make it 2 nites and see more.
Look at Oberammergau for best location. I like hotel Turmwirt.
I agree with Bob. Oberammergau is lovely, you can go to Linderhof to see a totally different Castle of Mad King Ludwig's, Ettal Monastery is close, Garmisch Partenkirchen and the Zugspitz are also close-by.
We stayed at Hotel Turmwirt several years ago, and it was lovely, we had a great corner room with a balcony, and the food was good.
However, I did not sleep well because of the Church bells, they rang more than once every hour. The lovely old Church is right next to the Hotel.
So if you are light sleeper, you might check out this Forum or Trip Advisor for some other ideas
And if you can only spend one night you will still enjoy the area. Google maps says less than an hour from Neuschwanstein to Oberammergau, and a little more than an hour from Oberammergau to Munich, so you would still have some time to explore.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a bigger smaller town than Oberammergau - the Zugspitze looming over this town makes it so so sweet.
Fussen itself is a neat town to stay in.
