We are planning to take a Rick Steve trip that ends in Bled, Slovenia. We want to then spend a week in Rome, Italy. I need some advice on mode of travel from Ljubljana to Rome. Flying was too expensive. The train from in Slovenia was not direct to Venice to connect to Rome. It seemed, time wise that there is a direct bus from Ljubljana to the train station in Venice. Anyone with any experience with using a bus to Venice and then a train to Rome?

Train from Venice to Rome is easy. Go to the Italian train site (http://www.fsitaliane.it/homepage_en.html). There should be many trains each day from Venice to Rome, although some will require a change. Taking trains in Italy is a piece of cake and if you book early enough you can get some pretty cheap fares. You can book on line and you'll get a number to use to pick up your ticket once you get to Italy ( in your case Venice).
I was in Ljubljana this summer and wanted to get to Italy and found it discouraging to find a train that would work. It's really convoluted with several changes. Buses in Slovenia are fine - they are comfortable and air-conditioned but they do make a lot of stops so can take a while. If that doesn't bother you then booking a bus to Venice should be fine.
You are planning to spend some time in Ljubljana aren't you?
Surprizingly, Slovenia do not have direct connections with Italy. Neither with buses or trains. They cut down connections due to excuse, they are not profitable. There is some private bus companies doing connections between Slovenia and Venice, some shuttle companies as well. You might want to get more information with company listed on official slovenian tourist site:

www.drd.si is the quickest and most direct bus connection between Ljubljana and Venice that I know of.
