We will be in Vienna for 4 days during a Prague-Vienna-Budapest trip. Wondering if Salzburg is a doable day trip or if we need to go there over night? Thank you.

Tales from Venice, Bologna, Pienza and Rome

It is 2.30 to 3.00 hours by train from Wien to Salzburg and the same time going back. A day trip is possible but with 5-6 hours travelling would be a long and possibly tiring trip.
A closer and very pretty day out would be Melk Abbey possibly combined with a boat trip through the Wachau Valley. Best April through October.
But, Salzburg would work as well, the old town is almost entirely a pedestrian district and fairly compact.
The quickest train connection from Vienna to Salzburg is 2:22 one way. I would suggest a one day trip and go there early morning...while on the train you can enjoy the landscape and see the danube river and the danube valleys. It is quite easy to do some day trips from Vienna http://www.iamvienna.org/around-vienna/48-day-trips. As you stay 4 days in Vienna you can easily plan a city day trip as the other days you can spend in a more relaxed way anyway like walking in 1th district and spending soem time in Belvedere park or schönbrunn and going around the Ring Boulevard with the Ring Tram.
