We are thinking of flying to Bilbao and driving along the Spanish coast through Santander. Would anyone have experience of the towns along this routes and whether the coast is the place to be. We can't decide between this or crossing Spain toward Barcelona or even a trip inland to Burgos then Santander and back to Bilbao. We are mature travellers

When are you planning this adventure? You can drive most of the coast once you leave Bilbao and cross over into Cantabria, but since Santander is just a short drive, you may what to check a map and plan your route. If you have the time, I would head for San Sebastian-Donostia along the coast, swing down to Pamplona and over to Vitoria-Gastiz before heading back up to the coast. Once back in Bilbao, you can head for Santander, and beyond.
Or you could start your drive in San Sebastian-Donostia, heading along to the coast to Bilbao and then to Santander.
It will all depend on how much time you have and the time of year.
