Hi
I was hoping if anybody can provide me with some advice on trying to get from Venice to Ljubljana.
We will be staying for 5-6 days in Italy, so we will rent a car in Rome, and then drive to Venice. We want to spend 2 days in Slovenia and then fly out of there.
1) I have come across the DRD.SI website which runs buses from the two cities. This is 25 Euros per person and it roughly a 4 hour trip
2) Train to Trieste, then taxi to Koper, then try to rent a car in Koper? Is there a rental car company in Koper?
3) Rent a car from Italy to return in Ljubljana ( I got a price tag for $1,300 for a 4 day rental through Hertz). Any suggestion which rental company is reasonable with this arrangement? Any experience with EuropCar?
Thanks!

There's a cheap, scenic and interesting way, using a regional train Venice-Trieste for €14, the historic tram Trieste-Villa Opicina(border) for €1.10, taxi the 3 miles across the border for €12, then a domestic train Sezana to Ljubljana for €9.
No prior reservations necessary or possible, and a range of departures every day.
See http://www.seat61.com/Slovenia.htm#Ljubljana-Trieste-Venice
@Man_in_seat_61 That seems like a nice way to experience the area, but I forgot to mention young kids in tow and luggage

I'm sure most of this price is for the huge drop off charges for renting in one country and dropping in another. You won't be able to avoid this unless you return the car in Italy.
Why don't you drive to Trieste, drop the car, and take a bus to Ljubljana.
This is perfect for us too! Only two of us. The R/T car rentals out of Italy seem outrageously expensive. One Italian-based car-rental firm won't provide insurance outside Italy. Kemwell explained that the international auto rental firms charge the Italian (high) insurance rates wherever you go. The train sounds perfect. We'll do the R/T Trieste-Ljub-Trieste and avoid the car for that leg of the trip. Then the train to Venice and out by airplane to the US from there after a few days.
Hi!
GoOpti is probably your best bet for a fast direct transfer.
Fares can be as low as 14-20euros per person.
