What kind of guide are you looking for in Rome? When are you going? I have a guide that I have used and referred others to. They do tours of the Vatican as well as other areas of Rome. Here is the website:
http://www.angeltoursrome.com/
Check out the website and contact information. People have been pleased w/ the Angel's tours. They are reasonably priced also.
There are many other recommendations for guides but not sure what you are looking for.
Some general info and downloading ipad and audio tours:

There are so many private guides that it is not possible to list here. I am sure others will have recommendations for ones they have used.
nanamimi3- here is another Fodors link with all kinds of personal guide recommendations.

sarge56: Thanks for that link - great info, I have bookmarked, has other areas outside Rome for guides.
Basically looking for a private guide that will take us to the main places in Rome- vatican, colluseum, etc. If a private guide ends up too expensive - then we will go on group tours
We used Agnes Crawford as our guide for the Forum/Palatine Hill/Coloseum last year and would highly recommend her. www.understandingrome.com
thanks so much. I will look her up
