HI,
We are making our way from Dijon, France to Venice, Italy in 4-5 days in late June 2013. We need help working out the best itinerary. The various options and transport issues are confounding us!
We're thinking about:
Day 1 - Dijon to Chur by public train - overnight in Chur
Day 2 Bernina Express (Chur to Tirano) and onward to Lake Como
Day 3 (and 4) Lake Como - thinking possilby Lezzeno?
Day 4 or 5 - Lake Como to Venice
We have many questions....
1. Does this itinerary work - perhaps Lake Como before Bernina Express would be easier? (We have no choice about starting in Dijon and finishing in Venice.)
2. Is Lezzeno a good choice for Lake Como, given our overall itienerary? (We happen to think it looks gorgeous, but can be swayed by practical matters!)
3. Are we best to rent a car to travel to Lake Como? If so, from which city/town?
4. Would it be better to make Lake Como a base and travel for a day trip into the Alps? Would we see the same spectacular scenery as seems to be advertised on the Bernina?
Any and all suggestions, words of wisdom, links, etc welcome!
Thanks,
Sherri

By the way - 'we' = myself and my better half!
First of all, to minimize hassles you could take a TGV to Zurich from Dijon and transfer there for the train to Chur. This would take between 3-4 hours and would be the fastest timing.
If you WANT to you can check train schedules for that route by using www.sbb.ch/en
Chur to Tirano on the Bernina Express will afford some outstanding scenery for sure. The transfer in Tirano to the TrenNord station is simple; the two stations are across a small square from one another.
Personally what I would do is take the train from Tirano to Varenna which is mid-lake Como and either stay in Varenna or take a short ferry ride across the lake to either Bellagio or Menaggio. Staying in any of these three towns will give you a good experience IMO.
From there (Varenna) it is about a 1.5 hour train ride to Milan where you can change for a TGV to Venice.
Thank, Dukey1! Much appreciated. One more question: would there be any sense in doing the Como/Bernina Express in reverse, perhaps travelling to Lugano from Dijon in the first instance, ferrying to one of the three towns you recommend, make our way a few days later to Tirano to join the Bernina Express there, then travel from Chur to Venice? Or is this a case of six-of-one...?
