I am planning a holiday to Iceland (basing myself in Reykjavik) from 12th November to 21st 2012. I’m trying to plan an itinerary and would appreciate some advice on what I have come up with so far. I have a feeling I am trying to fit too much in!
I am looking at booking a lot of tours and would appreciate some tips on what tour companies to go with. I am on a budget but like going with smaller tour groups as they tend to be more personalised.
I also wonder whether it is easy to travel by bus around Iceland at this time of year to see these places without booking tours as it would save quite a lot of money.
Also, is it better to book all these tours in advance, or should I just go to tourist information/hostel on my first day sightseeing in Reykjavik and get my information from there?
I’m open to ANY suggestions, thanks so much!

We were on a cruise in July and spent 2 days in Reykjavik and 1 in Akureyri. We did the Golden Circle tour by superjeep 4x4 with IGTours (info@igtours.is), a small tour operator, owner Odinn. We were 7 of us but they should be able to fit you in with others, they also have a tour in a van to seat 13 plus driver/guide. Odinn and his guides are all extremely professional, their prices were also the most competitive, good value for money. I know Odinn does tours to most of the other places you want to visit.

I know many people do the Blue Lagoon/airport through Grayline, though we didn't use them.
In Akureyri too we got a full day tour to Myvatn, Godafoss, etc with Auoun(taxi@taxi-no17.com), another small outfit, couldn't recommend him highly enough.
Suggest you email these people, also look on Tripadvisor, there are a lot of operators in Reykjavik, not so many for Akureyri.
Have a great trip, hope you get to see the Lights
I did the same thing as you are planning...stayed in Reykjavik and took day tours.
I used Horizon for one tour and Reykjavik Excursions for three. Horizon is a small group company and Reykjavik Excursions is one of the largest tour companies. I actually preferred Reykjavik Excursions because of the wonderful guides...two of theirs were also small group. Horizon is owned by David and although he gets rave reviews, I didn't think he was as informative.
