I will be traveling to Brussels the first week of March with a coworker and her 16 year old son. Looking for a recommendation of a hostel or an inexpensive hotel.

This hostel is in a good location, just off the main shopping street (Rue Neuve) and near to City 2 shopping centre. Unfortunately there was a fire in it last January and so they spent 2012 rebuilding / refurbishing (still closed at time of writing but due to open mid-Jan) but I would think that would have rather good results for anyone staying there post-renovation:

I might add that one advantage of staying there is that City 2 has a supermarket - you are close to supplies there!
