I am just starting to plan a 4 week (or so) trip to Ireland this coming August. I think that we'll start with a few days in Dublin, then rent a car for the rest of our trip. Given that we'll never get to Ireland again, we want to see everything that interests us (history, nature, folk music) during this trip--but we don't want to rush from one sight to another, which is why we're planning to be there for a month.
Would four days be a good length of time to spend in Dublin? More? Less?
How many days in Dublin?

Four days for Dublin would be fine, there used to be a great web page giving an itinerary for the long weekend but unfortunately Tourism Ireland in their "wisdom" have deleted this and many other useful pages probably to make room for their "Gathering" hype. Rant over..
if you have 4 at the front and a couple at the back before your flight home that would devote a 1/4 of your time to the City, so maybe have a think about just a couple of days up front?
Assuming you count the day you land you would have 3.5 days in Dublin - which I think is enough. It's a fairly small city, but there are some sights in the outskirts (such as Newgrange)- that you could see as day trips from Dublin if you want to add a day or two.
Be sure to visit the theater - usually lots of interesting things going on - preferably a local - like Wilde or Shaw - if possible.
Thanks to you both--that's just the information I was looking for. We arrive in the morning, so will have most of that day and three more, then get our car on day 5 and head out.
