Ack! I feel like a union scab -- I've realized too late that most Fodorites are shunning the sub-sections (and with good reason). So I'll ask this question here:
Does anybody know when the Christmas lights will be lit this year on Regent Street (and any word on which "celebrity" will flick the switch--or is that kept as a surprise)?
My other festive season question concerns pantomimes: I'm longing to see one, but will be leaving london on Dec. 15. Will that be too early to see a panto?

I'm pretty sure you'll catch a pantomime. May I mention that the best are not in the West End, but out in the suburbs ? You can find them in "Time Out" or "What's On" weekly listings magazines, which you can buy at your arrival airport. The tradition is best kept where the show is not centered upon known stars of television soaps. The Albany in Deptford, the Young Vic in Waterloo, and the Bubble Thatre Compny wherever they're playing are strong at this.
I'm afraid I don't know about the lights on Regent Street. Please write if I can help further. Welcome to London

Thank you very much, Ben. That's just the sort of advice I needed. I'll try to see a proper panto in the suburbs, as you suggest, rather than one featuring a soap star (who would most likely not be a star to me). Now if I could see John Inman as a dame...that would be different. Thank you again for being so helpful--here and to so many other posters with so many other questions.
