Lucca to Provence

Going to Rome and Tuscany region mid May 2013. Our friends are trying to get to Provence area of France from Lucca. They will have 4 nights remaining once we leave Lucca. Have not booked flights yet from states so this is part of trip is still up in the air.

Should they attempt seeing the Provence area and leave out of Paris to return to the states?
