Planning a trip for early May 2013 to Florence for 4 days where we'll rent a car and drive to Santa Margherita for 3 days. From there would like to have 2 destinations in Provence, was thinking Eze and Montpelier, each for 3 days before ending the vacation with a TGV to Paris for for 4 days before returning to back to Miami.
We like to explore small towns, leisurely lunches and dinners, drive into the countryside.
Are Montpelier and Eze well located to explore the surrounding areas or can you make another recommendation?

I think I might be inclined to base in Eze and St. Remy. St. Remy is an easy drive to Avignon where you can get the TGV to Paris.
One thing you should consider for your drive is that renting a car in Italy and returning it in France will incur a steep drop off charge. You might see where you can drop the car in Italy (Genoa for instance), train to Nice and pick up a car there for the Provence part of your trip.
