Hi all!
We are going to CH on very short notice (actually DH is there already and I will be leaving tomorrow) and will spend Christmas and New Years. DH is Swiss but has not lived there for over 30yrs and has never been familiar with Zurich. So I need a bit of help to make a dreary business trip enjoyable. This was totally unexepcted so I have had zero chance to research.
We will be spending two non-consecutive nights in Zurich and taking care of business during the day, any recommendations for dinner? Something nice to do on a chilly evening? Small museums that open late?
We will be staying with friends close to Bern but they have an event on Christmas Day so we will be on our own, dinning on this day might be a bit challenging. Anyone has a suggestion? (backup plan is having a bread, sausage and cheese picnic).
I have been a few times to CH but always in the summer. Any Christmas market in the area? Special activities? Any advice is welcome.
Short, Unexpected Trip to Switzerland. Zurich and Bern Advice most Welcome!

The Zurich card has a list of things to do.

There's also a fondue tram.

Haus Hiltl for Vegetarian Fare/Konditorei/Buffet
For a nice dinner you should try the Kronenhalle-not inexpensive but nice atmosphere and the art on the walls is all original.
I would bet that you can find a nice Christmas dinner in many of the town's hotels, for ex:
Storchen
Schweizerhof
Widder
? whether Zunfthaus zur Waag (? open on 12/25).
Keith and I really like Hiltl in Zurich. It is very popular and always packed.
If you want a Five-Star dinner then you should head to the Hotel Baur au Lac. This is where the jet set hangs out and some of the ladies you see there are so snooty they make Kim Kardashian look like a wallflower.
Definitely hit up Sprungli and Teuscher for goodies on the Bahnhofstrasse.
Wait until you see the prices in Zurich. The hair on the back of your neck will stand up.:
Take a walk up to Lindau Park for a beautiful view of the city.
Visit the Fraumunster to see the Chagall windows.
You could head up to the Dolder Grand Hotel. It is an icon of the city and has been completely renovated.
View the Angel of Zurich in the Bahnhof. Lots of food stalls here, too.
Tschuss,
Thin
bread, sausage and cheese picnic could easily be changed in toast, foie gras or smoked salmon and some stilton with port picnic...
A friend of mine told me there should be some light show on the facade of the Federal Palace in Bern at around 7.30 pm. Your friends should be able to give you more info.
If the weather is nice and crisp in Bern, you could also have a walk up the Gurten, if there is still snow.
Thanks to all for the great recs!
