Any recommendations , is a guide necessary? We'll be there for 4 days and don't want to miss any important sites...or off the beaten track places. We arent shy about exploring and like the "local scene". AND we are foodies!

I don't know any tour guide, but the Warsaw Old Town is a must-see, though most of it is just re-built after WW2.
If you have time, also take a day trip to Krakow, it's worth it

In Warsaw, there is a guide called Grzegorz (Gregory). You can find him on warsaw4u.com. I choosed him, cause he got a lot of reviews on tripadvisor.
He provides 4 different types of tour: the first "Jewish Warsaw" is very good, "Historical Warsaw" was bit changed cause I wanted to visit Lazienkowski Park. I am 100% satisfied of his service.
PS Warsaw and Cracow are completely different cities. Its good to visit both of them and...Poznan is also great.
you can get a quide from vip-poland.com they could help you plan this travel. i afrre with zag22 that the Warsaw and Cracow are completely different places. but i think be in Cracow is a must!

I visited Krakow with the Free Walking Tours, maybe in Warsaw they also do a good job?
