In a press release today, Trenitalia is alerting customers that many of its trains will be sold out on and around Christmas:

Four million passengers are expected to use Trenitalia between today and Epiphany, an increase of 10% over last year.
For the RESERVED trains, ECONOMY and SUPER ECONOMY tickets are especially in demand, as well as roundtrip day tickets on medium distance routes and the 50% discount for children up to age 15 years, 0 days (these discounts are NOT offered on the UNRESERVED "regionale" trains, while the 50% discount for children is up to age 12 years, 0 days).
