Hi, My friends and I are taking a trip starting from Edinburgh and ending at the fairy pools in Glenbrittle. There we will spend the night. I was wondering if anyone could suggest stops on the way there and on the way back to Edinburgh? like half way between each place to give a little stretch and explore on the 5 hour car ride. thanks!

Pitlochry is less than halfway from Edinburgh but more than halfway from Skye.Its a nice place, Lovely dam with a unique fish ladder, 2 distilleries ,one in Pitlochry and one about 2 miles away,a 300 year old Inn (Moulin) with it own micro brewery,There is the Heather Gem factory you can do a tour of, loads of shops and resturants.
Just 5 hours? That sound very optimistic to me unless you drive flat out, don't get held up by roadworks and slow vehicles, and don't make any stops at all.
That aside, there are many places worthy of a stop. On the way out, I'd drive up the A9 and maybe stop at Pitlochry as mentionend before), Killiecranckie, or Blair Castle (though you won't have time for a full tour). A bit further up the road is Dalwhinnie distillery - the highest in the UK. Further on, the A86 is very scenic especially alongside Loch Laggan.
On the way back from Skye, you should really try to take the ferry to Mallaig and drive down the "road to the isles" to stop off at Glenfinnan, which is ideal for a short break in the journey. On the other side of Fort William (really, REALLY don't stop there) is Glencoe and the spectacular drive over Rannoch Moor down to Crianlarich and the Trossachs. If only you had more time...

There is no way on Earth you'll make it to Glen Brittle in 5 hours. That is a 7 hour drive flat out w/o any stops at all. (and driving back via the ferry would take even longer) You have no time to stop anywhere really except for a pit stop when necessary. Certainly no time for any exploring/detours.
It should really be a 2 days drive each direction because there is so much to see, so many places to stop. Are you sure you want to drive 14+ hours in 2 days?
to be totally clear - that 14 hours is the 'behind the wheel' time. In real life w/ necessary stops along the way you are really looking at 17 or 18-ish hours.
