My husband and I will be traveling to Rome in july 2013.
We will be there for about 5 days with a group from work. We want to take advantage of being in Europe and try to see another area outside of Rome for a few extra days. We need some ideas! We will likely see areas close to Rome as part of the work outings scheduled so we are thinking of places a few hours away via train. We don't have to fly out of Rome either. But again, we only have an extra two nights so we don't want to spend the majority of our time on a Train going too far.
We are in our late 30's , love beaches, small hikes, great wine!
Thank you!
Two extra days outside of Rome... Need destination ideas

If you love beaches, take the train south from Rome to Anzio/Sperlonga/Gaeta - short trips, all of them, lovely beaches, and plenty to see inland as well, assuming you have a car to explore. Wine won't be a problem, no matter where you travel in Italy.
hi Debbie,
I'm going to suggest a place i went to last year which might fit your interests - a southern Tuscan town called Orbetello. it's on the main line to Genoa from Rome Termini, [the train journey takes just under 2 hours] and is set on a lagoon, so there are several sheltered beaches. also biking is very popular there and you can rent bikes to get around.
the town itself is quite interesting and pretty old, and there are some nice restaurants.
Thank you!
I will look up the suggestions. It would be great I find a location to stay the two nights and just explore a city or two close by. By bike would be even better!
Orvieto is an hour by train if you prefer an easy to reach hill town.
ky - you're right.
I'd remembered it taking longer, perhaps because we got cold [it was February] so we went back to the station in time to get a hot chocolate from the cafe [which was very nice, BTW].
We loved Orvieto and if you can swing two days in that area, you might also add Civita di Bagnoregio to the trip. But an early train to Orvieto from Rome Termini is an easy ride and we really enjoyed our day in Orvieto. You can sample the local Classico wine!
You could also spend a day in Tivoli to see Hadrian's Villa and gorgeous Villa d'Este, especially if you love fountains! It was my favorite in the Rome area.
