Hi thursdaysd (and anyone else with advice to give), this is my current itinerary (with overnight train trips planned between each leg, so normally each day listed is a full day in a city after or before an overnight trip):
Arr. Kiev very early 3rd August (i.e. middle of the night)
3-6 August - Kiev, inc. trip to Chernihiv
7-9 August - Lviv
10-11 August - Chernivtsi; day-trip to Kamyanets-Podilsky
12-15 August - Odessa
16 August - Fly out of Kiev
Given your advice on Chernivtsi, perhaps I should consider something like:
Arr. Kiev very early 3rd August
3-6 August - Kiev, inc. trip to Chernihiv
7-9 August - Lviv
10-12 August - Odessa
13-15 August - Crimea (overnight train to Simferopol followed by day or overnight trips to...? Sevastopol? Yalta?)
16 August - morning flight from Simferopol to Kiev followed by afternoon flight home from Kiev (would need to transfer between the two airports here but I think I would have plenty of time, arriving at Zhulyany at 9.30 am and flying out of Boryspil at 2.05 pm)

Definitely Yalta. I just used Simferapol as a transit point, didn't stay there. Another option for the flight home is Istanbul - there are (or were) flights to/from Simferapol.
Thanks for your advice, I'll have a bit more of a look at logistics (cancelling and rebooking hotels, train times, airport transfer etc.) and make a decision
