Are you staying on the coast (where?) or in Naples? If the coast, then I would start the trip there as it's difficult to get to the airport early in the morning for departures flights (usually very early because they have to connect somewhere in Europe).

Is there any way to add a few more nights to your trip? Do the 10 days include your flight days?

Fly to Naples - 3 nights
Train to Rome - 3 nights
Train to Florence - 4 nights
Fly home from either Florence or Pisa

I would look at the best fares and best connections rather than making a determination with no research.

Florence does not have an international airport so you could not take a non stop flight. Rome and Florence are 1.5 hours apart by train as are Rome and Naples. Probably Rome is your best bet but you do need to research this.

By the time you factor in the time and cost from traveling from Rome to either Florence or Naples, it's often cheaper and more convenient to just book flights to Florence or Naples.

honestly, Dmitry, if all you've got are 10 days [which = 9 nights] you don't have time for that itinerary. Remember, you lose 1/2 a day more or less every time you move from one place to another. so if you flew into Rome and out of Naples, this is what you would have:

Day 1 - arrive Rome, train to Termini, train to Florence, arrive lunchtime or later. max 1/2 day in Florence [possibly with jetlag]

Day 2 - Florence am, pm pick up car, drive to ?

Day 3 - tour Tuscany.

Day 4 - drop car off in Orvieto, 1/2 day in Orvieto, [which you really, really do not want to miss if you're going to be there anyway] train to Rome.

Day 5, 6 - Rome.

Day 7 - train to Amalfi. arrive lunchtime or later.

Day 8,9 - Amalfi

Day 10 - fly home from Naples.

it's not impossible, but you will find that no sooner have you arrived, you'll be leaving again.

personally I would decide which 2 places I wanted to see most, and concentrate on those.

Pisa has a big airport with international flights, and it's an easy hour-long train ride from the airport to Florence.

Mimar - it won't make a great deal of difference - it'll still take a couple of hours minimum to get from Pisa Aeroporto to Firenze SMN [only 2 trains an hour, and not all trains go direct, some you have to change at Pisa Centrale] so depending on flight times, the OP would be unlikely to get to Florence before lunchtime on Day 1.

no. it's too far. if you really, really want to go to Capri, then spend a few days in Sorrento and lose somewhere else. For example, you could stay somewhere in Tuscany [not Tascuny] and do a day trip to Florence instead of staying there, or you could miss out Rome.

I am very much afraid that you are going to have to:

1) look at a map
2) check out some train schedules

Capri is near Naples - not Rome. A day trip from Rome to Capri would be extremely onerous and leave you with only a few hours there.

As to where you should fly in and out of - where are you coming from? You should look for the most convenient flights (without multiple stops that will eat up more of your extremely limited time).

nytraveler: I have looked at the map. I know that it will take a good couple of hours to get from Rome to Capri, but the urge to see it blinds me.Unfortunatly I have 10 days. It is really tough choice that we have to make. But I guess we will have to do that

I did a day trip to Capri from Sorrento and didn't find Capri to be anything special. Lots of tourists in the towns and since it was an overcast & rainy day there wasn't much of a view.

I can't imagine spending the time to get there from Rome since it will take more than a couple of hours. Hotel to train station, 1.5 hours train from Rome to Naples, taxi to port and waiting for the next boat, hydrofoil to Capri and then transportation from Capri port into Capri town and Anacapri. It's at least 3 hours each way but more likely 4 hours each way with waiting time between types of transportation.

Dmitry - many a good trip has been spoilt by the desire to "see it all". Face it, you just can't do that, not even if you had a whole lifetime. the best you can do is to plan sensibly to see the things you really want to see.

if Capri is a priority, then go for it - but lose something else that you are not so keen on. spending a whole day getting there and back just for a couple of hours there, especially when your trip is so short, just isn't a sensible way to use your time, IMO. OTOH, a few days in Sorrento seeing Capri and other places in the area could be really nice - but you will have to leave another part of your trip until the next time.

It is NOT a couple of hours. First you have to get to the Rome train station, then take the train to Naples, then get from the Naples strain station to the dock and then wit for a ferry and then get a ferry to Capri. this will probably be at least 4 hours from door to door - so 8 hours traveling for perhaps 4 hours or so on Capri (the ferries back to Naples stop running in later afternoon).

If you take the 8:45 train from Rome (meaning leaving your hotel at 8 am) you will arrive in Naples around 10 am. So you might get an 11 am ferry or hydrofoil to Capri - arriving there at about noon. You then need to take a taxi or funicular from the Marina Grande up to the town of Capri. Or hop right in a launch to go for a visit to the blue grotto.

Time for lunch and to see the grotto or the Villa Jovis or explore Capri or Anacapi. You really need to think out the logistics of this.

nyt - I don't think that anyone said it was. what adrienne and i both said was that it was a very long way to go just to be able to spend a very short time on Capri. I agree with you that it's just not worth it for a day trip.

In addition to the train from Pisa to Florence, there is a shuttle bus.

Even if you fly into Florence (requires a flight change in Europe), you will still arrive about the same time (flights from my area often get you there by noon) you would if you flew into Rome, train to Rome and train to Florence.
