Greetings,
My husband and I are taking off for a MUCH needed couples week in June... we were able to exchange our time share for the Grand Solmar at Land's End Resort & Spa - It looks really lovely and gets good reviews. We have the One Bedroom suite - (can we leave tomorrow???) We have not been to Cabo in about 8 years...
Would love to know if you think a car is necessary with the location of that resort? In the past we have rented a car as we were staying on the "corridor" area - I am having a hard time visualizing where this resort is located in Cabo and would prefer not to rent a car due to the pricey insurance... but don't want to feel "trapped" ...
Any recommendations for dining in Cabo? Also any type of excursions? I know my husband will want to go fishing one day (I will not join) so any recommendation on that would be fantastic as well!
So excited for this time away!!! It has been a very long time since he and I have had a week vacation alone together...

For better Cabo info, check out the forum on trip advisor.
We were in Cabo 12/11 and 12/12. DH always wants a car. In 12/11, we were closer to San Jose and got a lot of use out of the car. This last December, we stayed at Sunset Beach, which is up the Pacific side. The car came in handy for running into CSL, but I don't feel we got our money's worth this time. We didn't even use up the tank of gas. If we had done some excursions or day trips, perhaps it would have been worth it.
Where you are staying is very close to the main harbor area. I don't think you will need a car the whole time. Maybe rent one for a day or two if you want to explore or go for a day trip. We have used Cactus Car. Alamo is also recommended. Ask for the special, trip advisor rate. This only has the required insurance. Use your credit card coverage for the collision coverage. We have also used Dominic for car rentals. More expensive, but very easy to use and he offers excellent service.
As for dining, lots of good choices. Heer is a link to Trappers List:

We like the following in CSL:
Tabasco's $ - this is a great beach bar. Not over priced like The Office, great food and away from the crazies.
Cilantro's at Pueblo Bonito Blanco-$$.
Mi Casa-$$. Gets mixed reviews, but I still love it
Golondrinas$$$ beautiful setting, great food.
Maro's Shrimp House$ great
Cocina y Cantina is highly recommended, but we haven't made it there yet.
We also have favorites near San Jose. Check my old trip reports. I didn'do one this year or last, but I should.
We were in Cabo in December. I can highly recommend Concina y Cantina. It was excellant. We also loved Sr. Sweets Bistro and Dessert restuarant in the Marina. Since it was our first visit, we did several of the touristy places. We actually enjoyed the food at Cabo Wabo and found the best drink prices at the Giggling Marlin.
We did the AI at the Marina Fiesta. The included AI restuarants were located on the Marina and anyone could dine at any one of those restaurants and not just the people participating in the AI plan. We really enjoyed all the restuarants in that location. I do have a trip report posted here with a picture link if your interested. Just click on my screen name.
Cabo is definitly a place to go back to just for all the food options. We loved the convenience of being at the Marina and within walking distance to most everything.
DH has done some fishing in Cabo. Be prepared, it is VERY expensive. It is good if you can share a boat in order to share the cost. Pangas are less expensive.
Thanks for the insight - our trip is coming up and we are both getting very excited - we are in great need of some true alone time as couple .... It will be our combo 16/17 year anniversary trip...and just some much needed time away.

I am still really torn on the car rental... I think I am going to pass but hope I am making the right call...
we really don't want to do much - read, relax... a few good meals, sleep
Be sure to arrange transport from the airport before leaving home. I can't recall all, but some transportation names to check out are Transcabo, Translobo, Celito Lindo, Cape Travel. Check trip advisor for recs.
Thanks Michelle - better than just trying for a cab? I have always had a car rental in Cabo (I have only been 2 or 3 times and have not been since 2005 or so...)
There are some union rules as to who can pick up at the airport, so arrange for pick up ahead of time. As you are probably aware, the timeshare sharks will lie and tell you they are ther to pick you up, yada, yada. So don't fall for it.
Thank you MIchelle!
Yes, definitely arrange your transportation before arrival. Cabo is different from PV (for example). Just grabbing a taxi is quite expensive. It's 29 miles from the airport into town (well since you've been before maybe you remember this). I did not rent a car. I used Transcabo as mentioned above, arranged online in advance.
Thanks Suze... we have only rented cars and I do not recall dealing with the insurance issue that I read about now... (the expensive insurance) It possible but it did not stick out to me and I feel like it would have.
Get a car to see more than the tourist stuff and experience the real Mexico. Buy all the insurance the car rental co. sells. I read a lot on this and the thing you do not want is to go to jail in an accident. You want good insurance coverage. Your credit card only gives you some coverage not all that you will need. I hate to pay, but, for the peace of mind I plan to get it. The car will run around $55-+ per day.
The Solmar is where were staying in April and May. They rent cars at the resort also. I would not rent from the airport unless you are only here for one week. Long drive and you may not want a car for that many days. We have been here two other times, small nice resort right on the beach. No one selling you anything. Look at Google earth for pics. They do not show the new Grand Solmar. Which is really nice from the web site. You are 10 to 15 minutes walk to town. Easy and safe. You can walk the road or the pier. Food is really high priced in town on the water and close by. Read all you can about what you plan to do. It's all on the net.
Call the Grand Solmar, they have (I believe) transportation to and from the hotel and airport for $34.00 each person round trip. They bill your room. Without buying round trip from the airport to your hotel, you would have to get a taxi back to the airport at a unreasonable price. Transcabo; I have used before, $36.00 per person round trip. I feel confident that the area around the resort has not changed and you can walk the beach without being harassed and sold something. check the web, Solmar has several resorts here that you can go to and charge to your room. Oh Ya (at the airport) Remember once you pass the spot where you push the button to see if you get a green or red light. Don't stop for anyone until your outside. The sharks will use any intimidation and badges to get you to stop and they will want to sell you a timeshare. Don't waste your time. When you’re at the resort they resort will try to sell you a timeshare also.
Have fun.
We rented a car in Cabo, it was easy, and seemed less expensive than other options, and because of travel time, that's what I'd do. Plus, love the freedom of being able to go anywhere in the area. But if neither of you feel like driving, of course find other transportation.
Enjoy, it does look lovely!
Thanks so much for the tips - we are getting excited - it is coming up! I was able to arrange for a shuttle through the hotel for 35.00 r/t per person - so $70.00 total for transportation to and from the airport. That looks like it was a good amount based on the quick search I did. We really want little to no agenda for the week - just some time to reconnect and relax. If we get to feeling strapped without a car we will rent one. Like you Frankie I prefer to have options ...but am thinking for this trip no car. We shall see
That sounds like a good deal for the shuttle. Hope you find your hotel as lovely as it looks online
!
I hope so too Frankie...as we know that is not always the case. Read some reviews of construction so that tweaks me out
. But being land-locked in Concrete city Dallas - makes me long for that ocean!
