Car needed in Arenal, Costa Rica?

We will be in Arenal for 4 days. We do not have a rental car. We are using shuttles to get to various towns/hotels. I was wondering if there is a need to rent a car while staying in Arenal? We only have one activity booked so other tan tat we will be using activities at our hotel, Los Lagos. However, we've heard mixed things about expensive restaurant and not good quality food...and to get to town would be costly every day va taxi.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?
