We will be in Arenal for 4 days. We do not have a rental car. We are using shuttles to get to various towns/hotels. I was wondering if there is a need to rent a car while staying in Arenal? We only have one activity booked so other tan tat we will be using activities at our hotel, Los Lagos. However, we've heard mixed things about expensive restaurant and not good quality food...and to get to town would be costly every day va taxi.
Any thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks.

We don't rent a car when we're there. We do a lot of tours, and they pick you up and drop you back off at your hotel. Other than that, we take taxis. The area is spread out though so they can add up.
Also, if you're not staying right in the town (like Lost Iguana) you can ask the tour transportation to drop you off in town instead of back at the hotel, if that fits into your plan.
We took cabs, and discovered that the cars are less expensive than the van type taxis. Most drivers have cards, so you can call them for drop off and pick ups as needed. Restaurants and hotels will call for you, if you don't have a phone.
