I was thinking about stopping at Carara Park on the way to Manuel Antonio from San Jose. We are flying in that day and I would like to stop, get out and go for a hike so that we could stretch our legs and enjoy a bit of C.R. that I haven't seen before. Would like to do about an hour or so of hiking. What are the trails like? Our driver doesn't mind stopping. What do you think? Thanks for your input in advance.

The temps can be HOT! so be prepared to carry some water. The lagoon trail is great for birding and other animals but heats up early as there is less shade cover. Can be muddy in the rainy season.
The forest loop off from the ranger/info station is an easy hike terrain wise and will bring you through the mixed dry/wet forest type. We saw a troup of Capuchin monkeys when we went through a few years back. There was a nesting pair of Macaws not far from the station.
A stop at the Tarcoles river is good for Croc sightings below the bridge.
Thanks for letting me know how hot it will be. I'll make sure to pack some water.The lagoon trail sounds interesting. Maybe we will get to see some animals as well.Any suggestions as to where we might stop for a bite to eat?
We always stop at "Steve and Lisa's" on the road to the right when you see the coast for the first time, I think, befor Jaco. The casados are good at a good price also. Don't forget a good pair of binoculars, 8x42, even when you stop for lunch as the birding can continue while you wait for your food.
