We've been through Atenas frequently and stayed a couple of times. The answer to your question depends on your definitions of "close" and "anything"
We've stayed there because you're out in the country away from the noise, pollution and insane traffic around San Jose, Alajuela, Escazu etc. but still close to SJO airport (about 15-20 minutes). You can also easily visit the butterfly farm in Garita, Zoo Aves on route 3 to Alajuela, and the artisans at Sarchi in less than half an hour (much faster than from downtown San Jose especially during rush hour). Poas, the La Paz Waterfall Gardens and the Barva Sector of Braulio Carrillo all take about as long to reach from Atenas as they do from San Jose.
Thanks!
Stayed there a few nights. What guide says is true. But Atenas itself is certainly not a "destination". You'll need a car for sure. We stayed at a B & B, (can't remember the name), it looked better on their website than how it turned out.
Yes I have been there its really great place to spend some days.
I used to live in Atenas and still live close by up in the mountains. Great little town, authentic, IMO a good location. You are 1 hour to the beach, like 2 & 1/2 to Arenal, close to the airport as mentioned and there are some things somewhat close. The weather is fantastic in Atenas, good locally grown coffee, 5 varieties that are local. IMO an awesome little town.
Atenas is a beautiful town. I'm with Incabod. It is a nice place to base. If you are renting a house out of the center of town, though, keep in mind that it gets dark around 5 - 5:30, and it is a hassle to drive anywhere for dinner, because driving is tricky at night. We have a place in a nearby town, and we do most of our eating out at lunch time, then do dinners in our place.
