My husband and I (in our late 40's) will be visiting CR for the first time in mid-May and I currently have the following itinerary worked out:
Days 1-6: Stay in La Fortuna (Casa Luna Resort and Spa). Do ziplining, white-water rafting, horseback riding, and visit a thermal spa.
Days 7-11: Stay in Manuel Antonio (Hotel Parador), Visit park, go on ADR Adventure Park 10 in 1 Tour; Villa Vanilla Spice Tour; possibly ATV tour
This leaves us with 3 more nights (of which only two are viable sightseeing days). We will have a rental car and I thought we would head back towards the SJO area...my husband has never been *up close* to a volcano so I was thinking maybe spending those nights in the Alajuela area (perhaps Xandari?) as a base to visit the Doka Coffee Plantation, Poas Volcano and Sarchi. Or should we go further east - to the Orosi Valley maybe?
I'd appreciate any advice on the last part of our trip as I am very torn with what to do.

You could also visit the La Paz waterfall gardens after an early visit to view the Poas caldera (maybe even stay at the Peach Lodge): http://www.waterfallgardens.com/waterfalls.php
The town of Sarchi and surrounding area is also a nice idea.
Maybe you could do two nights at the Peace Lodge and a last night at Xandari. We've stayed at both and really enjoyed them. We did a combo Doka Coffee tour and Poas tour from the Peace Lodge. There are five beautiful waterfalls on the property where you can hike plus all the exhibits, trout fishing, etc.
