We are traveling to Roatan for 2 weeks at Christmas with our 6 kids ages 15-25. We have reservations for the first 4 nights in West End at Posada Arco Iris. Then we have 2 days without plans before going to Utila for 4 more days where we rented an apartment at Sandy Bay. My question is: should we go to La Ceba for 2 days to the jungle tours before heading to Utila or is there plenty to do on Roatan. We will also have 3 days on Roatan at the end of the 2 weeks, with no plans for accommodations yet. If anyone has stayed at Posada Arco Iris, let me know if it is great and we should book it for the last 3 days of the Roatan trip or is there a better place in that same price range.(mid range budget) Traveling with 8 of us is expensive so we are trying to cut costs anywhere we can. That is why we are wondering if going to the mainland to the jungle is really worth it. Also any recommendations for places to stay in La Ceba for the jungle trips would be appreciated. And any recommendations for places to stay on Roatan, especially in the West Bay area, (which seems to be very expensive for our budget), or West End, would be appreciated. How are the jungles on Roatan? Thanks so much!!!!!!

Sounds like a blast! There's some good jungly hiking in the Carambola Reserve in Sandy Bay on Roatán, good for an hour or 2.
On Roatán we like the Sandy Bay area best, but we do most of our own cooking and aren't interested in going out in the evenings so being close to the night life isn't important to us. What is important is walk in access to terrific snorkeling which we find there. With that many you could consider renting a house; there are lots on offer at www.vrbo.com , though the prices are higher over the holidays and some places will already be booked. We stayed at Hobbies Hideaway on our most recent visit, a great value place. www.hobbies-hideaway.com
I can HIGHLY recommend Omega Lodge for jungle adventures near La Ceiba: www.omegatours.info Lodging is free if you pay for a tour - not sure how booked they might be over the holidays, though, only 6 weeks out.
You can check out our photos and recommendations below - links on the main pages of each collection. Happy trails!

Thanks so much for all the info. Your pics are amazing!!! I guess we need to decide if we want to go to La Ceba for 2 nights to explore the jungle there. We have been to the jungle in Costa Rica and in Belize. I noticed you have too. Is it pretty much the same? If so, we will keep ourselves busy on Utila and Roatan and not worry about rushing around so much. Thanks for all you help!!!!
I haven't been to Costa Rica so can't compare. The jungle/mountains near La Ceiba feel really different to me because of the steepness - most of Belize is really low lying and flat. It would be easy to spend 2 weeks just on the islands - we spent 2 weeks on Roatán in July and will likely split 2 weeks between Roatán and Utila next summer (after 3 or 4 in Guatemala). Happy trails!
