We are three young seniors trying to plan a trip to Costa Rica for the last 2 weeks of January. We tried to go with Caravan tours, but they are full. We are retired and are on fixed incomes. We don't mind roughing it a bit, but not for the entire trip. Is it too late to plan it on our own? We' think we'd like to see Monteverde (cloud forest), Poas Volcano (butterfly, humminbird gardens, la paz waterfall) , or Arenal volcano, a coffee plantation and hot springs. We have done a lot of reading but we are not sure where to go from here.

Hola!
January is a hot and sunny month in Costa Rica.
I think that Arenal Volcano is a very good choice.
One place I really enjoy is National Park Manuel Antonio.
There you have: beautiful beaches, you can do hicking, see monkeys, tucans, etc. I really like this place.
Visit a coffee plantation could be great too.
In Tarrazu, it's known like one of best coffee in the world.
Hope you'll like your trip!
Cris
I don't think it's too late. If you were trying to plan for Christmas or another busy time, it might be, but I think you'll be fine. Those are all very tourist friendly places. Maybe check out Silencio del Campo in the Arenal area and Fonda Vela in Monteverde and see what you think. Eco Termales and Tabacon are two places we like for hot springs. Poas and the waterfall gardens can be done as a day trip from the Central Valley or you can stay somewhere in the area for a night. The Doka Coffee Estate is a great coffee tour. We used the Jeep Boat Jeep through Desafio to go between Arenal and Monteverde - pretty cheap and save time on the road.
