We plan to drive an SUV leaving Canada in late December 2012 to Central America returning at the end of April 2013. Our first stop will be Antigua, Guatemala for two weeks of Spanish school. Leaving there we plan to drive down the Pacific coast through El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica then Panama. We will then return up the East coast through CR and Nicaragua again through Honduras to Belize.
Any suggestions on "not to be missed" or "should be avoided" locations would be appreciated. We've been to CR several times and Nicaragua once so will focus this trip on other countries.

That's a lot of ground to cover in 4 months. Have you checked out maps? It's not always possible to follow the coasts. My favorites are Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras; here's a link to my photo collections with blog, travelogue, and review links on the main page of each collection.

Hi guys!
My boyfriend and I are going to do the same road trip, also leaving Montreal late November.
If you fancy, we could meet up somewhere and share our traveling tips.
For now, we heard that crossing Central America is quite risky with all the narco-traffic, kidnapping, murders but let's give it a go and get fool!
It will definitely worth the adrenaline!
Let me know if you are keen for a catch up, someday.

Are you still planning your trip? I am a motorcycle rider looking to join a group of people to increase safety from US ( CA, AZ or TX) to guatemala city.
Anybody heading that way??
