We are thinking of vacationing on Cozumel at the Hotel Intercontinental this winter. We stayed there previously and found the offshore snorkeling very good. We are curious if the hurricane that hit there a few years back destroyed the coral or not? Jumping off the ladder into the ocean and snorkeling there was a great daily pastime....especially not having to pay to take a boat ride to a reef. Thanks for information.
Have you snorkeled offshore from the Hotel Intercontinental lately?

Much of the shallow coral was destroyed during the hurricane. However, that was a few years ago and it is making a comeback. While I think you can have fun, you may find the area changed substantially since your last snorkeling. You can get out to the larger, shallow reefs quite easily by boat from that location -- Columbia or Palancar Shallows.
I do understand what you like about the daily snorkeling from shore though. We do it two or three times a day from our resort and I love not having the worry or expense of a boat.
We assume it has changed, but loved being able to snorkel from shore! Where do you still snorkel from shore??
We stay at the Coral Princess on the North end. We go every winter for a month -- 20 years now. I've watched and waited for the return of the coral, sponges and fish. Its so wonderful to see the ocean healing after the storm.
I am very curious now! Do you work at MSU in Lansing, MI?
No.....sitting here in cold Minnesota waiting to get to Cozumel in February.
I asked because we met a man 2 years ago that has been going to Cozumel for 20 years. He goes every year when MSU has their break between fall and winter semesters. I cannot remember the name of the hotel he stays at while on vacation. I think it is on the south side of downtown San Miguel, not the north. Enjoy your month of February. Lucky you! It is COLD in MI, too, but that is what winter is all about here!
Well if you want to escape the cold...come on down. It's 80 and sunny in Cozumel this week I hear. The North end is really nice. So much more residential in feel and the shore snorkeling is great because its iron stone shore rather than a sandy beach.
Some of my photos albums both above and below the water at:

Enjoy!
Thanks for letting us see the photos! GREAT! I am a year around bird feeder, so loved shots in the wild!
I have another question about the Coral Princess....no beach. ): I am a real beach person...both swimming and walking, so that would be a minus for my favorite island pasttime. I assume you have to go to a beach...how close is the nearest? Do you rent a car for the month?
I appreciate your answers.
Again, all pictures are good to see. What a great 40th anniversary trip!
Thanks, again....
Send me an email and we can talk. Happy to share all my knowledge.
