We are planning on staying at the Hotel Nayara near Arenal and are looking for similar accommodation on the coast at Guanacaste. We are active non-surfing seniors. Smaller hotels are definitely preferred.

Not sure what the Hotel Nayara is like but last year we stayed at Ylang Ylang in Montezuma and it was a lovely hotel. You can do a variety of things from the town (rent ATV's and go to Santa Teresa, take a boat from the town out to an island to snorkel, or go hiking in the nearby national park. The hotel was located on the beach and the food was good. You could walk to the town for different meals, etc.
On the level with Nayara, you might look at Hotel Playa Hermosa Bosque del Mar, Cala Luna in Tamarindo (very, very nice, but not right on the beach), or Flor Blanca in Santa Teresa. Ylang Ylang is also great. And, you might also consider Sueno del Mar in Tamarindo.
I'm bookmarking because I'm interested in this area too. We've stayed at Nayara; you'll love it.
