We have been invited to visit friends in August who will rent a house on the beach near Ensenada. We will fly into San Diego and drive with them into Mexico. (They live in San Diego and have rented houses in this area of Mexico in the past.) We will be traveling with our two children, ages 7 and 13. We have never been to Mexico before - would like tips from experienced travelers to this area of Mexico. I need info. on what US documents to bring (we don't have current passports), any safety concerns, and ideas for good restaurants, shopping (especially Mexican crafts)and interesting sights. Thanks!

I have traveled to this area of Mexico many, many times. It is very safe as long as you take precautions like at any other place (not walking alone at night, staying in public areas, and not doing things you would not do in your own country). Puerto Nuevo, small quaint village between Ensenada and Rosarito is a great place for Lobster Puerto Nuevo Style (Deep fried lobster served with refried beans rice and hand made tortillas, delicious!!!) I recommend the restaurant calle Numero Uno. Just carry a valid driver's license to get back into the United States if you are a US citizen. For your children their birth certificate is fine. As a quick not, drinking on the streets or driving while intoxicated is NOT allowed in Mexico as many tourist think it is allowed. Have a great time in Mexico, you will love it.
puerto nuevo is a great place to stop for a meal and some waundering around.
further south of encenada (maybe 45 minutes???) is la buffadora (spelling). if you go at high tide, it is a cool blow hole that the kids may enjoy. the drive down is nice & there is more shopping stands set up there. don't arrive at low tide as it won't be very impressive. have fun.
