Have read some opinions that snorkeling in PV can't compare to the caribbean or gulf side of Mexico. Is it worth trying, and if so, can someone recommend a good excurision for snorking in PV. Will be staying in the Marina Vallarta. Thank you.

I can agree that it's nothing like on the Caribbean side. Whether it's worth it to you or not, well personal choice. There are day trips/boat cruises where they take you out to spots with supposedly better snorkeling than off the beach provides.
Check out www.vallarta-info.com for some of the possibilities.
Some of the beach areas are not so good due to sandy bottoms. But also, if it rains in the hills, the shore line will muddy up significantly. We took a day trip out to some islands, but the water was not clear and snorkeling was not good. The tour tried to make it up by taking us to a beach south of PV, but that's not what we went on the tour for. I don't think PV is known as a snorkeling site.
That last sentence above sums it up perfectly.
The snorkeling on the Caribbean side (or even in Cabo) is much better. The water can be pretty murky in PV.
Yes, I have to agree. The snorkeling in PV is not great and depending on what time of year you go, we went in December, the water is cold and very cloudy. Not much visibility. However, we saw a few pretty fish.
We did the Yelapa & Majahuitas tour with Vallarta Adventures that included a snorkel stop.
