Traveling in Car from San Francisco to Carmel

I will be traveling with a group of 4 friends in late May and leaving San Francisco to stay 2 nights in Carmel by the Sea. I was wondering how to plan the best stops along the way and while there as well. I’m aware that the majority of travel will also be along highway 1. What’s the best way to route it out? We love food, nature and sightseeing to name a few.

You have two route options. Highway 1 along the coast, or 101 freeway.
If you want the slow drive, then Highway 1 is the way to go.

Stops could include:
Tide pools just south of SF. I forget the name so maybe someone else will chime in.
Halfmoon bay. - for lunch
Año Nuevo park - for marine mammal viewing
Santa Cruz, for a walk out on the pier.
Watsonville for field fresh strawberries
Castroville, for field fresh artichokes
Marina State beach, to watch the hanggliders
Monterey for a stroll through the town

CA1 is slower than US101 or I280, but not by much once you are past Half-Moon Bay. It is definitely more scenic, especially between Pacifica and Santa Cruz.

Agree with Michael. Half Moon Bay to the edge of Santa Cruz will take less time than you might think.
