So from thee information kindly provided, in above posts, I should plan on visiting D'Berto on Saturday, as I mentioned in my post, above, since Sunday and Monday are not the best days for seafood. Correct??

I think I will initiate a discussion on a food-focused forum, as some of this chatter is likely not of much interest to many folks here...too personal and too food-focused..not sure if I am allowed to say this here, but hungry onion.org is good for food-focused travel.

Maribel, thanks so much for mentioning the Amazon show. I watched the Etxebarri and Noor episodes. Excellent!! When Andoni of Mugaritz dined there, I chuckled when I saw what he was wearing: A logo t-shirt!!!! I thought of all the threads where people, including myself, agonize about what kind of clothing to wear in Europe, especially in restaurants. And here is a guy eating in a now-three-star Michelin restaurant in a (wrinkled) t-shirt!!!! I wish some of the clothing-anxious posters could see this!!! However, even though he is who he is and can certainly wear whatever he likes, I'm not sure I would go to such a restaurant in such casual dress. Somehow it seems disrespectful to the owner (I know they are friends and former colleagues), since he takes such care in the appearance of the place and of the staff, not to mention the food.
Question: Am I very old-fashioned in my thinking? (I do remember all the white sneakers at El Campero, which I commented on, I think, but that was such a casual place as compared to Noor). I am very curious as to what you think

eks,
Andoni never, ever, ever dresses up! That's just Andoni, and every chef knows what to expect from him sartorially LOL. When he received the prestigious Icon Award at the World's Best Restaurants ceremony last fall, he wore a black t-shirt, jeans and sneakers, his "uniform".

Looking at that info from the Parador in Pontevedra, how very weird that D’Berto, supposedly one of the best seafood restaurants in the whole of Spain, closes from November through to March? This is the period when the local product is in its prime. Can’t be right.

Andoni's dress code reminds me of Zuckerberg! I do remember last spring, having lunch at LA MADIA, purported to be one of the 2 "best" restaurants in Sicily (2 stars) and one of the best restaurants I've ever experienced, I was surprised the some Italians came dressed just a tad "nicer" than Andoni. There are only about 10 tables and I guess most of the dinners were wearing sneakers.

Sneakers in Spain are SO in! I feel very unfashionable in Madrid if I don't have on sneakers, lol.

I've emailed Berto to ask if they always close during the winter months.

I would imagine (only guessing here!) that it's just a necessary "down time" for them, after the hectic summer season, the Festa do Marisco in October and lack of tourism in the A Lanzada-Sanxenxo-Illa da Toxa during the winter.
Since it's still strictly a family operation, the family probably needs some welcomed time off to rest and relax and maybe travel, as is the case of Antonio in Zahara, La Castillería in Santa Lucía (Vejer), El Campero in Barbate, Casa Marcial in La Salgar.

Thankfully there are alternatives like Braseria Sansibar between A Lanzada beach and San Vicente do Mar. Christian and Luisa run a tight ship and he’s also a dab hand at the ‘brasa’. Great wild fish options such as rey/palometa roja/alfonsino, rodaballo/turbot, lubina/sea bass, house-smoked sardine fillet and shellfish such as longueiron XL (razorclam), almeja fina/rubia/babosa XL. They also have a good wine list featuring top notch Albariño producers like Locho Pomares (Zárate), Rodri Méndez & Raúl Pérez (Leira, Goliardo), Xurxo Alba (Albamar) and Chicho Moldes (Fulcro)…. Another great place near Meaño is Lagüiña Lieux-Dit run by Eduardo Camiña Ucha, former somm at Mugaritz. Extraordinary wine flights as you would imagine and GREAT food to match. Meaño is the real cradle Albariño in terms of its ‘pagos’ or crus if we use the French term.

That does look superb!

Maribel, I am thinking of substituting CULLER DE PAU for PEPE VIEIRA. Looking at photos and a few reviews, I think it might be more to my taste; the food looks simpler than Pepe Vieira.
Surprisingly, they (Culler) are open on Monday for lunch. I don't want to have every meal in the Pontevedra area to mean an expensive taxi ride, so given that I want to go to D'BERTO, I won't do both of those restaurants (not to mention the prices!). But the taxi ride at least gives us some chance of seeing the countryside. I probably should have spent much more time in Galicia, as you mentioned. It's just that the direct flight at a reasonable time only goes on Wednesdays. AND, the partner does not eat shellfish (poor thing!)

Have you watched the El Culler de Pau episode of De la Vida al Plato?

At least at D'Berto your partner can have a steak.
He's a very nice chap indeed accompanying you to all those marisquerías. I remember that at Ramiro all he had was a prego!

You know, Maribel, I did not watch that episode but will do so, probably tomorrow. I think you are mentioning this because it focuses on seafood more than Pepe Vieira (true??) and it's also a longer (more pricey, I think, taxi from Pontevedra..... I will watch the episode and then talk to the partner.....I think sometimes he is relived for me to leave him alone to eat whatever he wants near the hotel, especially if I go out and buy him something (not anything fishy!!) he can eat in the room (especially if they have tv in English which I doubt at the Parador)..! In fact I will ask him to watch the episode with me. He really is a great sport..great memory of the prego at Ramiro!!

The entire idea of Lanzarote is so foreign to me; I feel as we are visiting a country other than Spain.

Just a small note on the hotel, LANI'S SUITES. I'm not sure I've ever booked hotel with better communication back and forth prior to arrival.
I've written them just a few times, about parking (yes, free) and today I asked them to cancel a restaurant booking that I had made in error and was unable to cancel myself by e-mail (I requested but did not get a response and did not want to leave them hanging). so I. wrote to ask the hotel to cancel the booking for me and, no kidding, within a half an hour I received a wonderful response from them along with their list of recommended restaurants on the island (I had asked if they had such a list, see below)... It's very good when you feel you've forged a good communication in advance of your visit. I remember a hotel in Cordoba that it took two or three e-mail to ask them to help book a restaurant....

Time will tell whether or not we love the hotel, but it does look very promising, and with an interesting ownership story.

We leave next week!!

Maribel, I booked CULLER DE PAU and D'BERTO from La Toja, and most of the others you recommended in Santiago and in Pontevedra.

Restaurant list for Lanzarote, provided by hotel; several are pretty suspect but who knows (??). I have my own list.

Well, that list is a little long! I think something very every budget and taste.

I'm am surprised that SeBe and El Risco aren't on the list as they are two of the best on the island. Perhaps it's confined to places that are nearby, in the immediate vicinity, although our hotel restaurant is on the list in Yaiza.

My own list for our Nov. trip that I've compiled thanks to many of my favorite bloggers/critics coincides just a bit, but it doesn't include Asian, Indian, Italian or a steakhouse, as it´s all Spanish, and we'll be staying 30 minutes from Tías.

I won't pay much attention to the hotel list, but maybe will ask them about some on my own list if they seem savvy about the subject.

What did you think of my own long list? Anyplace I should cut out, as far as you have heard, or read?

Where is your own long list? I think I may have missed it; can't find it on this thread.

Sometimes the hotel staff is quite savvy about outside dining and sometimes not or just the opposite, as we well know.

Maribel, I wrote down all the places I thought would be good to try on Lanzarote.
I've already booked SEBE and EL RISCO.

I have so many threads going on that I can never find anything by now, and now you are correct! I KNOW I wrote one somewhere but can't find it....so: here it is, with some notes on location reference to my hotel. Please add anything and everything that occurs to you!! I put an asterisk(s) at the ones that sounded best.

*CESAR LANZAROTE (close to hotel, center of island)

***EL RISCO (lunch, Friday). NE area Repsol

***SEBE booked 5/28 (on vacation before then) 1 SOL

*LILIUM near airport

*PALACIO ICO. (NE island). Maribel?

TACANDE (Haria) pig; rice; Michelin NE

KAMEZI Repsol far SW

*TABERNA A DE LINO (steak)

HORNO DE LA ABUELA pig; Cordero; casual

AMURA west of hotel, not far

BODEGA DE SANTIAGO Yaiza, Timnafaya

LA CHALANA (PDC; if do not want to drive)

MAJO PICON north center (Tinajo) casual

LA TIENDA DE LOURDES small local food shop featured on Josie Andres; near Sao; not far from EL RISCO; bring home potatoes, mojos

I could not find any with SOLETES on Lanzarote, though.

These are the ones in which your list and mine coincide:

Bodega de Santiago
Kamezi
Tacande
Palacio Ico (where we're staying)
César Lanzarote
Lilium

I also have El Risco and SeBE, but you already have booked them

Sounds good.
I would like to try a local place where we can try local, non-fancy local dishes; a couple of those on my list seem to be in that category, but it is very difficult to ferret out those from the tourist-driven places, and maybe all of the restaurants have to cater to tourists due to the nature of the island economy.

The ones I think might be in that category are:

HORNO DE LA ABEULA
MAJO PICON
TABERNA A DE LINO (MEAT, FOR JEFF)

I will ask around once we arrive but this is a place that is a little different than those we've been to before in Spain, in that it seems to be such a tourist-driven place and who knows if I can even find locals to chat with about food!? But it will be fun!!

Just now I overheard my partner on the phone with a friend who asked about our upcoming trip. Partner said we were going to Galicia and then taking a ferry to the Canary Islands..! He is such a treasure but honestly, I think I need to make him one of those tags to wear in case he gets lost. I told him to think of Mario Lanza when he wants to remember which Canary Island we are headed for...... Honestly, a person as likely to just go with the flow would be difficult to find!!! The day before, he takes about 15 minutes to pack (with my help) and is all ready with one small suitcase,, and iPad and medicines in zip-loc bag....(the flip-top phone stays home; the only unsolved issue is whether or not he can access Yankee games on the road)

And here I am, about four days out, already unloading all my shelves, trying on clothes, making piles for "yes," maybe," "look good on me but probably will not wear," and on and on!! It's kind of fun now that I no longer have the anxiety that came with packing. And I always have Zara in case I forget any clothing!!

I am going to begin a new thread now about Lanzarote, since there do not seem to be any, and all of this has become jumbled up with Galicia.
