Hi,
I remember some discussion some time ago about LAN Peru imposing a loading or surcharge per sector on tickets booked from outside Peru.
Have I remembered this correctly, and can anyone provide me with some updated information and maybe some reputable alternative carriers.

Probably you are talking about the restriction on the least expensive domestic fares Lima to Cusco, they are only available to Peruvian residents. For Peru, it has nothing to do with whete you buy the ticket.
But if flying into South America on LAN or a One World partner you may be able to add Cusco at a reasonable cost, or buy an airpass.
TACA does the same on Cusco flights.
The airlines without the gringo tax are Star Peru and Peruvian Airlines.
If you have miles on American you might be able to use them on LAN.
For TACA, you might use. United miles.

We flew Star Peru from Juliaca to Lima. It seemed completely normal to me.
Star isn't bad, and I don't think TACA or LAN are worth another $200 to $400!
For any of them, keep checking on your flight schedule and allow an overnight in Lima before the international flight home. They all cancel, delay and change flight schedules on occasion. Star was the only one who sent Merryl an email.
No extra tax to book from the US. Your question is a nice opportunity for me to add three positive points about LAN and flying in Peru.
1. I was going to book about 6 LAN flts online, then suddenly the one I wanted disappeared so I called their toll-free # and booked. When we were all done and the price was set, the agent said, "Let me try to reduce this cost for you." She did and saved me a few hundred dollars.
2. All flights had a little snack or meal, which saved me the time and money of eating once I landed. The little snack or meal was good, though little.
3. In Cuzco the flight was delayed. When I asked the agent about it, he very nicely walked out from behind the counter and pointed at different directions in the sky to explain the various forms of cloud cover and the resulting delays. I got a whole tour.
