You can be robbed anywhere and we can't predict the future.

However, I traveled to Rio with an iPad, a camera and an Android smart phone. BUT aside from the electronics I never take anything (any trip, not just Rio) I would be unhappy losing - i.e. no good jewelry. In fact, I was warned not to wear jewelry of any kind on the streets in Rio and BsAs.

Scammers are endlessly inventive so it would be impossible to list all of them so the best advice I can add to Thursdays is not to stop if approached on the street, don't use phones in public places, check carefully around you before using an ATM and use one inside a bank if at all possible.

In many years of travelling I have only experience two problems, the first was in Sierra Leonne where I wandered into an area I shouldn't have and was subjected to an attempted mugging. It was not successful but I kicked myself for being in an known dangerous area. The second was an unbelievably inept attempt on a subway in Barcelona where a guy sidled up to me in a virtually empty carriage and tried to pick my pocket. It was quite hilarious really as he was being watched by me, my wife and our two sons and their wives and thought we hadn't noticed him! A time when I was glad I could speak ok spanish!

In essence take sensible precautions but don't worry too much.

Do not bring anything of value to the beach.
