CA, Monterey to SF and then to Napa Valley

Three ladies in their 50's are going to visit the above area for a 4 - 5 day trip. We are leaving from Fresno and heading to Monterey, Pebble Beach and Carmel. We'll visit all 3 in one day. The next day we plan to travel to San Fran. Then we will head toward Napa for 1 to 2 days. Any ideas on places to visit on our way from one location to another. We can't visit too much but would definitely like to see the best sites. Also, where would be the best places to stay for the evening? We are on a budget so looking for hotels from $85 - $150/night.
Also, what roads should we travel. We'd like to avoid traffic and construction. All ideas are appreciated.
