2012 New England Leaf Peeper

I'm planning an Oct 4-13 trip to New England with my 81 year old Texas mother. We are flying into Boston. Being from Alaska, I am clueless as to the best route to take from there. Should we head NE, NW, up the coast.....??? We would like to see NH, VT and ME.
I would like to NOT change lodging locations every night, but rather stay somewhere for 2-3 nights and do road trips from each place. Is that a good plan? Any suggestions on good locations and routes would be so helpful. Thanks
