We've been going every year to Maui and we are going to be staying there for two months (Feb./March) in 2014. Since we haven't been to the main island for several years, I was thinking it would be great to spend 2 or 3 nights in Oahu - to see Pearl Harbour and the Polynesian culture centre and the North Shore. My hubby and I would love to find a real Hawaiian place to stay - a bungalow by the ocean or something that wasn't your typical hotel or motel type of place. We're looking for at least a 3-star type of place, something that is unique and yet quite tropical - is there anything like that anymore in Hawaii? Anyway, if anyone can give me any hints, I'd really appreciate it!

I have no specific suggestion, but I think you'll need to look outside Waikiki. That's where most people stay, and the accomodations there are pretty much all hotels (in all styles and price ranges).
I am not aware of too many real B&Bs on Oahu but Volcano, Big Island have several that fit that bill.
Though not a B&B The Turtle Bay on the North Shore may have cottages.
