We will be flying in and out of Savannah for 6 days in mid-October. We've been in the area once before, years ago, so have a bit of familiarity with it. We want to find a nice locale to stay in where we could enjoy various outdoor activities like kayaking, biking, walking, crabbing, fishing for my husband. We'd also like to be able to make some day trips to interesting places. We are willing to drive north or south from Savannah a couple hours. We are looking for a house or apt. rental, preferably on the water, perhaps in a tidal basin area. We'd prefer a place with the feel of the old coastal south.
We are not Hilton Head and gated community type people. We much prefer something more authentic in a smaller town perhaps. We don't want to be in a large anonymous condo. We really aren't looking for ocean front and don't want windswept beaches. We don't need a pool. Nightlife is not needed. We are in our 60s and happy to entertain ourselves in the evenings if we have a nice place to stay.
Anyone have any good suggestions for locales? Thanks.

More "authentic?"...Suggest you look around the Beaufort/Hunting Island area for a start.
Jekyll Island , GA or the Beaufort SC area.
Thanks. I'll check them out.
I too would suggest Beaufort [but I am biased].
- it's got a great historic district, a mini-Charleston.
- Water everywhere, 270 islands in the county
- boat rental available at Port Royal Landing Marina as well as inshore and offshore charters. Kayak rentals and tours as well.
- Plenty of places to crab.
- adjacent St Helena Island is home to shrimpers, crabbers, Gullah, and in someways is a real step back in time.
- Upscale as well as downhome dining.
- Tons of history in town and within 30 minutes.
October is a great month.
You might check VRBO for rentals. There arre any number of places, of all sizes, available that are on the rivers and creeks with their own private docks.
I have a home there so let me know if you have questions.
BTW, if you are looking to be on the ocean, check out Fripp Island for rentals.
