My most recent trip was to northern Arizona from Central Oregon. From Medford go through Reno to Hawthorne, Nevada (US95)
Next night is Williams AZ (via LV and Kingman). Decide in the morning if the weather is suitable to go north to the South Rim GC from Williams. Next night is in Albuquerque, NM. Next night is Wichita Falls, TX. Finishing in Shreveport.
From Astoria you might want to come over OR 58 to get to US 97 north of Chemult. Just a bit shorter than coming through Medford.
You could also include destinations such as Zion NP, Sedona AZ, and Santa Fe NM in your routing.

After you drop off the car to your son, are you headed back to Oregon? If you have the extra time consider riding the "City of New Orleans" to Chicago and the California Zephyr to Sacramento followed by the Coast Starlight to Portland.
The northbound Coast Starlight leaves Sacramento about midnight which leaves you a few hours of daylight in Sacramento to see the capitol grounds and Old Town Sacramento. Both are within walking distance of the train station.
New Orleans is a long way from Shreveport, It's a 5 hour drive and there are no flights between the two cities. shreveport also does not have amtrak. So you'd have to figure out how to get to New Orleans from Shreveport.
williamscb13 is correct about connection to Amtrak from Shreveport. It is about 40 miles from Shreveport to Marshall TX which is the closest place to connect with the Texas Eagle from Shreveport. The Texas Eagle only runs 3 days per week between Chicago and Los Angeles. I just wondered how they were planning in getting back to Oregon.
There is an Amtrak bus connection between Shreveport and Longview on the days that the Texas Eagle runs.
Why not just go from Hawthorne Nevada/or wherever you wind up the 2nd night - to the Grand Canyon?
And from there/GC - head out/toward/beyond Flagstaff - on the way to New Mexico - as we did - and check out the big Meteor Crater/museum about 30 miles east of Flagstaff - http://www.meteorcrater.com/ and also the Painted Desert Museum and the Petrified Forest - another hour plus beyond that. http://www.arizonaguide.com/places-to-visit/arizona-parks-monuments/the-painted-desert
The drive through eastern Arizona and into New Mexico is also very pretty - with the red hills in the distance.
Getting to New Orleans reminds me of the time I was "stationed" at Barksdale, Air Force Base - in Shreveport - for three weeks as a "3rd Lieutenant" - during the summer of 1966 while I was at the AF Academy. Every Friday night - since we had the use of a car for the weekend - we planned on heading down to Shreveport for the weekend.
She was a doll but never saw her again, as happens during the college years, eh?
Trouble was - the first Friday night - we stopped by the Officer's Club to have one for the road - and I beat the Full Colonel in charge of the B-52's at Liar's Dice in the Officer's Club. Well - we drank for free way too much the first Friday night - while I think he was just being nice to us young cadets, and woke up with a hangover in the Visiting Officer's Quarters.
The next Friday night - we stopped by for just one drink on our way - and the Colonel was there - and you guessed it - woke up in the VOQ with a big hangover.
By the third Friday night - during the course of my "official" duties at the base Civil Engineers office - they were nice enough to assign me the daily/afternoon "task" of retrieving a water sample from the base pool for testing - and they further allowed me a couple of hours to complete this "duty".
That is where I had the extremely good fortune to meet the Commanding General's very lovely/tall/shapely daughter - (who was home for the summer - from a college in the East) - so my interest in getting to New Orleans was significantly impacted.
Always wanted to get to Naw-leans - but no regrets at all about going out with "Sweet Sue" instead.
Now about our "bombing" Dallas in a B-52 - true story - on a nighttime practice mission - but hey - that's for another time...................
