I am hearing about a 50 mile radius, there are long lines. Just how far out does one have to go to get a station with a normal wait?

Better to stay on line where you are. It would take a couple of hours to get to a station with not wait.
Do you have enough gas to get there?
On Fri. I went thru Lincoln Tunnel, drove 10-15 minutes, got on Tpke south. In minutes there was a service area. No line, no checking of license plate, just lots of fun. Full tank.
We drove RT between Manhattan and Eastern Long Island yesterday, on the LIE. Passed many gas stations that were closed, and many that had lines, but noticed that BP stations were all open and had short, or no lines.
Note that many operating stations had only regular gas.
We had no trouble getting gas ourselves, and no wait, at the most easterly gas station on the North Fork, a few miles west of the Orient Point Ferry.
I also can report that the gas situation in Westchester seems to be ok..partner made the RT last week and was able to fill up with no line.
Seemed to be plenty of gas available along Rt 95 in Connecticut this weekend.
