We've had to make this drive a couple of times, in reverse. It is long and pretty boring, so make sure you have an audiobook or something to listen to.
From Lee Vining, take Hwy. 120 into Nevada, then Hwy. 6 through Tonopah to Warm Springs. Head southeast on Hwy. 375 to Ash Springs, east on 93 through Caliente to Panaca, then east on 319 into Utah. 319 changes to Hwy. 56.
My inlaws lived in Cedar City, so that was our starting point. From there it's about 90 minutes to Zion.

Make sure you fill the gas tank in downtown Tonopah. Rt. 375 is also known as the "extraterestrial highway". There is no gas in Rachel. I remember that gas was quite expensive in Lee Vining the last time I was there.
Good suggestion, tomfuller. I was thinking about mentioning that at one point, but it slipped my mind by the time I hit submit.

Thanks Lee Ann and tomfuller.
Is it better to go via Beatty and north Las Vegas then?
Not sure if it is longer.
