Three of us will be traveling to Asheville, NC for a weekend trip in the middle of this month, September 2012, and would like to hear of anyone with suggestions about what is going on locally around that time and the best places to visit near downtown Asheville. I have found many reads during the spring months but nothing for the fall season. Thanks in advance

You are going at the best time. I like wondering around. My favorite spot is the Grove Arcade but don't keep shopping from letting you view the fall folliage.
Fall is absolutely beautiful in Asheville! For restaurants, check out award-winning chef, William Dissen's restaurant, The Market Place. The tradition of farm-to-table is central to this restaurant and they visit the local tailgate markets twice per week when in season. They are located in downtown Asheville on Historic Wall Street.

Asheville in mid September should be very nice. I would check out the downtown area. The Biltmore Estate is nice if you have never been. There is a McDonalds next to the Biltmore that has been on the travel channel several times. It is one of the top Mickey D's in the county.
There is also a lot of good shopping and nice restaurants and bars in the area. Have fun on your trip.
