I need some help planning a trip for next summer to western North Dakota, eastern Montana and northeastern Wyoming for my family that includes a 12 year old boy. We'll be driving out to Bismarck, ND and staying with family there, then continuing our trip.
We love national parks and museums and would like to do some moderate hiking. I read about a petrified forest in western ND. Is that worth seeing? Since we don't have too much time (1 1/2 weeks), are there any "must sees"? Also, any hotel recommendations would be most welcome. Thanks!

Hi, I can't believe no one has replied to you until now. I haven't been on this site for years but was looking up some info for a friend and caught your message. I live in the eastern part of ND so I really can't help you much on the western part of the state, but my husband and I just took a trip out to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone last September. I can tell you that I could have spent A LOT of time out in the Tetons. We stayed at Jackson Lodge (in the park), went horseback riding, hiking, etc and I loved it (and I am not traditionally a very "outdoorsy" person). They have all degrees of trails, so I'm sure something would suit you. I truly found it much better than Yellowstone, which I had been to before. You can also take day trips, if you like, to Jackson Hole, Deadwood, etc. which is what we did. That was an experience. The time of year (Sept) was interesting because kids were back at school and places were closing up for the season. However, the gambling thing may or may not be appropriate for the 12 yr old, particularly with the history of several brothels in the area (not current ones, I presume
. Personally, I found the Grand Tetons by far the best part of the trip. If you plan to stay in the park, I'd make reservations early. Bon Voyage!!
I don't know if leftymom is still around or not. I was without internet service for a lot of October.
I with kimmer and if you haven't been to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons then that's where I would head. Enter the park on the Beartooth Highway starting at Red Lodge, MT. Spend 3 to 5 days in Yellowstone and a couple days at the Grand Tetons and exit Yellowstone at Cody, WY and visit the Wild Bill Cody Museum.
