My husband and I will be traveling from Franklin, TN to Natchez on the Trace this weekend with reservations at Monmonth on Saturday and Sunday night. Any suggestions for a nice place to get off the Trace and spend some time Friday afternoon and stay over Friday night? We like historical towns, old inns, B&Bs, and would like to see some nice antique stores.

We did not get off the Trace until Natchez, there are so many pull off's to read, it's a history lesson in itself. Take a picnic lunch and cold drinks as there are no places to stop and buy them...unless you take a diversion and actually get off the Trace, you will love it, it is beautiful and I think they are calling for good weather this weekend. AND you are staying in the most wonderful place! We loved it! Make sure you make reservations to have dinner at Monmouth one night, very special and limited guests.
I would recommend traveling from Natchez to Vicksburg, Talk about historial towns! and only about and hour and half away. Visit the National Cemetery: http://www.nps.gov/vick/index.htm and also the City Cemetery,
Thanks for the Vicksburg suggestion. I checked the website and it looks like a great place to visit; and we do have the dinner reservations for Monmonth. I'm glad to hear you recommend it, wasn't sure whether to go with it or not.

Here is my short trip report I wrote in 07:http://www.fodors.com/community/fodorite-lounge/natchez-trace-parkway-vicksburg-natchez-new-orleans-road-trip-report.cfm
Thanks cd. I read you trip report and look forward to a relaxing trip, and stepping back in time as we visit the beautiful homes in Natchez and the cemetaries in Vicksburg.
Kosciusko MS is a nice place to stop for lunch or just to shop.
There are many cute shops around the Square. There is also a Visitors Center at the Kosciusko exit of the Natchez Trace.
