What is your nightly budget? I think Radio City Apt. and the Beacon chain are both suites.
Bigger issue is how many beds you need and what you're prepared to pay. Even the budget hotels get pricey when looking for a big suite to stay together. There are options just outside Manhattan a short subway ride away. The Box House hotel on the edge of Queens /Brooklyn has some large loft suites.. Or you can split up in 2 rooms at Country Inn & Suites in Long Island City.
Leo House is a guest house run by nuns. They have one family room I hear. basic but well located. Not sure it's big enough for 6 though. http://www.leohousenyc.org/index.php?lang=fr
PS, a number of the suite hotels have 1 bedroom suites with 2 queen beds and a sofabed BUT they're moslty from the affinia.com chain who consider teens as adults so not so cheap.
Check out Radio City Apartments. They have various types of accommodations. This is in a very central midtown location too. http://www.radiocityapts.com/
The Beacon Hotel is wonderful.
You will have to shop for places that allow 6 adults in one room (in NYC 12 and up is adult - based on size - not age).
August rates are usually not bad - but you have not given us a clue what you want to pay. It might be cheaper to get one double room and one double/double (for 4 people) - assuming the 4 can share two double beds.
For suites look at Radio City, Beacon (call them) and Affinia. Eastgate Tower had some very good rates last summer - but it is an older building.
Do not expect anything that would be considered a bargain in other cities.
Eastgate has closed. Hotel Metro also has family rooms. You are visiting during the New York Gift Fair, vacancy may be an issue at some hotels, when you see something that will work - book it!
Oh - they;re finally renovating it?
